Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook Recorded February 7 – March 27, 1956, Hollywood, Los Angeles CD Released: 25 May 1999 Label: Verve Format:Mp3@320cbr This was Fitzgerald's first album for the newly created Verve Records. Fitzgerald's time on the Verve label would see her produce her most highly acclaimed recordings, at the peak of her vocal powers. This album inaugurated Fitzgerald's Songbook series, each of the eight albums in the series focusing on a different composer of the canon known as the Great American Songbook. Fitzgerald's manager, (and the producer of many of her albums), Norman Granz, visited Cole Porter at the Waldolf-Astoria, and played him this entire album. Afterwards, Porter merely remarked, "My, what marvellous diction that girl has". Frank Devol backs Ella with a 1940s-style big band with enough modernist, Atomic Age elements tossed in to stop it from being just an empty exercise in nostalgia. Fitzgerald finds the perfect marriage between mainstream pop and jazz singing -- her harmonic improvisations are extraordinary. A real treat. Disc 1: 01. This was Fitzgerald's fifth and final collaboration with Riddle during her years on the Verve label. The album is notable as Ella's only songbook to concentrate on the work of a lyricist. Riddle's lush arrangements interact most beautifully with Fitzgerald on ballads like "Midnight Sun" and "Skylark". Fitzgerald's impeccable swing is most evident on "Something's Gotta Give" and "Too Marvelous for Words". Johnny Mercer Tracklist: 01. This set includes two CDs with 32 songs chosen from Berlin's collection of nearly 800 songs. These selections are perfectly suited for Fitzgerald's voice and her romantic sensibility; they are happy, occasionally sad, and full of swinging rhythm. A few of these songs -- "Cheek to Cheek," "Puttin' on the Ritz," and "Blue Skies" -- will be most familiar; others, "Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails," "Russian Lullaby," and "All By Myself" are as memorable but perhaps less known. Choices like "Isn't This a Lovely Day?" feature everything a listener would want in a song: intelligent lyrics, memorable melodies, and a strong emotional center. To say that Fitzgerald is in good voice for these recordings would be an understatement; her presentation here is simply regal. Disc 1: Tracklist: 01 - Let's Face The Music And Dance 02 - You're Laughing At Me 03 - Let Yourself Go 04 - You Can Have Him 05 - Russian Lullaby 06 - Puttin' On The Ritz 07 - Get Thee Behind Me Satan 08 - Alexander's Ragtime Band 09 - Top Hat, White Tie, And Tails 10 - How About Me 11 - Cheek To Cheek 12 - I Used To Be Color Blind 13 - Lazy 14 - How Deep Is The Ocean 15 - All By Myself 16 - Remember Disc 2: Tracklist: 1. It was reissued on CD in 1991, although the CD version does not include the songs "Don't Ever Go Away" and "Song of the Jet". Though it is subtitled as such, this album is not usually considered part of Fitzgerald's 'Songbook' series, the last of the 'Songbook' albums having been recorded in 1964. It was Fitzgerald's first album of music devoted to a single composer since 1972's Ella Loves Cole, and it was her only album recorded entirely in the Bossa Nova style, though she had been singing Jobim's songs since the mid-1960s. Fitzgerald never worked with Antonio Carlos Jobim, though she appeared alongside Frank Sinatra for a 1967 television special that also featured Jobim. The title has a pun, as Ela (with a single l) translates as "she". It can be translated as 'She Hugs Jobim' (Ela Abraça Jobim) or 'Ella Hugs Jobim".

Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love) 8:50 The late great Ella Fitzgerald had probably the best jazz voice ever put down on tape. This collection of Cole Porter songs was the first of the "Song Book" collection issued by Verve and was so successful that they followed it up with an Gershwin and Rodgers and Hart collections, though in my opinion the Porter song book is the best. The recordings were laid down in 1956, the year after Porter's final Broadway musical, Silk Stockings, opened. Ella recorded them with the Buddy Bregman orchestra at Capitol Studios, L.A. The one flaw (if it is a flaw) with this set is that almost all the songs are so commonly recorded that you find yourself comparing them to other artists. Unsurprisingly Ella's voice compares well, some of the orchestrations are, however, not quite up to later standards as those by such masters as Nelson Riddle. Don't mistake me, Buddy Bergman did a fine job for 1956 but at times the orchestration seems dated and at others tries a little too hard to keep up with Ella. The style of the tracks varies greatly, according to the mood of the song. Ella picks up the beat and syncopation in such masterpieces as "You're The Top" and slows and sexifies the voice in "I Love Paris" and "Love For Sale." Overall the collection has a mellow, jazzy feel that varies between romantic and downright sexy. If you are looking for a good collection to load into the CD player for a romantic dinner, a quiet night watching the lights on Sydney Harbour with a brandy in one hand or just appreciate the varied styles and depth of talent of Miss Ella Fitzgerald then it is hard to go past this two CD set.

Duke and Ella never sound better. His orchestra is at its most elegant yet at its most swinging, her voice's is in its best form, so harmonically, rhythmically, and tonally sophisticated. Jazz's greatest event is happening. It is "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook," and it is too great to let pass you by. Alright, this is all true. With Duke's big band behind her, Ella was divine. She was even classier with his suberb small groups. Most of all, it showed both of their eclecticism. Duke was still overlapping rhythms, harmonies, tones, and different musical styles to their most mesmerizing effect. Ella was at her career peak at Verve Records. And for the record: Any of the songwriters she covered in the classic Songbook Series never sounded as awesome. She's the glue that provokes the Ellington Orchestra to outdo themselves once again. Their repertoire of jungle music, unique swing songs, lesser known songs, and more experimental songs is covered, and Ella fits these songs like a lace glove. Part of her incredible genius is her ability to adapt any type of music to her ebullient voice. (On the video of PBS's American Masters special about Ella, listen to her short takes on country and soul in a London Club. Dang!) In comparison to the rest of Ella's stellar career: "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook" is her peak. It is the centerpiece in her career's greatest period at Verve Records and the landmark Songbook Series. Of all of them, it's the most jazz-oriented. All of her Songbook albums are first-rate, yet this is the best. And it's also a taste of heaven, too good to let pass you by when you're alive. Get it now. And hey, Chick Webb's orchestra was one of swing's greatest bands, but what if she had spent a part of her career in Duke's orchestra? That might have been even better. And even she didn't, isn't this album more than enough?

I Got Rhythm I read in a book on Nelson Riddle that Ella Fitzgerald had wanted him for her first songbook which was on Cole Porter but unfortunately Riddle was booked with Nat King Cole and at times Sinatra so he was unavailable in '56. Fortunately three years he became available and perhaps it was serendipity or fate but when these two artists recorded the Gershwin songbook--it became an instant classic. I believe Riddle was at the peak of his arranging powers and Ella was in full voice with none of the wobbly vibrato that would later mar her last session with Riddle- "Dream Dancing", I believe on Pablo also produced by Norman Granz. But this set is a must have if you're into Ella's songbook series and of course this musical marriage between these two pros would result in six albums. Riddle was quoted as saying that Ella was his favorite female singer and his sensitivity to her artistry is brilliantly reflected in this album. For instance, Riddle took the risk of slowing down a tune that Ella had performed as a quick tempo scat song, but here the song takes a poignant meaning that makes this version a near classic on a par with the duo's rendition of "The Man I Love". In fact I believe this album is so popular that one can only purchase used since all the original copies are sold out. Nevertheless if you like Ella with Riddle, this songbook is the one to start with as well as their other two in the series, the Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer songbooks.

The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Song Books [Flac] TNT Village .: Release Originale :. http://forum.tntvillage.scambioetico.org/index.php?showtopic=328156 .: Cover :. http://images.umvd.com/ToeNails/4D70C71F2052416491151EA0F3B4D88A.jpg The Ella Fitzgerald Songbooks were a series of eight studio albums released in irregular intervals between 1956 and 1964, recorded by the American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, supported by a variety of orchestras, big bands, and jazz quartets. The eight albums are as follows, with arrangers in parentheses: Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook (1956) (Buddy Bregman) Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook (1956) (Bregman) Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook (1957) (Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn) Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Irving Berlin Songbook (1958) (Paul Weston) Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook (1959) (Nelson Riddle) Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Harold Arlen Songbook (1961) (Billy May) Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Jerome Kern Songbook (1963) (Riddle) Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook (1964) (Riddle) They are considered a cornerstone of 20th century recorded popular music, and as a whole, represent some of the finest interpretations of the greater part of the musical canon known as the Great American Songbook. The New York Times columnist Frank Rich was moved to write a few days after Fitzgerald's death that in the songbook series, she "performed a cultural transaction as extraordinary as Elvis's contemporaneous integration of white and African-American soul." Here was a black woman popularizing urban songs often written by immigrant Jews to a national audience of predominantly white Christians. As Ira Gershwin said, in the line quoted in every obituary: "I never knew how good our songs were until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them." Most of the rest of us didn't know, either. By the time she had gone through the entire canon, songs that had been pigeonholed as show tunes or jazz novelties or faded relics of Tin Pan Alley had become American classical music, the property and pride of everyone." [2] Frank Sinatra was moved out of respect for Fitzgerald to block Capitol from re-releasing his own albums in a similar, single composer vein. Verve reissued the eight albums in 1994 in this expansive boxset, which won the 1995 Grammy for Best Historical Recording.

Sing My Heart 2:32 If only for these sessions, Billy May, leader of the swingin' band for so many great vocalists throught the years, provides the backdrops here for Lady Time in these timeless recordings of the immortal Harold Arlen. Norman Granz had May earmarked for this project for a long while, and the results prove it. May's brash, swinging brass infused orchestra forms the perfect frame for Ella when she wants to swing, and a blue, smoky curtain when she wants to hush down with a ballad. It is interesting to note that so many of Arlen's songs became "signature" songs for singers who utilized them. Ella, who's had a few signature songs of her own, never tries to upstage the originals here (although anytime Ella opened her mouth it became a red letter event) STORMY WEATHER, immortalized by Lena Horne, is given the full blown treatment here, included is oft-skipped verse and intro, and the band and the singer are both in fine swinging form. Ella takes a little of that pathos from "STORMY" and uses it in the lovely "MY SHINING HOUR". Here we can witness Billy May knew how to write ballad charts just as beuatifully as he could swing, and the tempo is moody, reflective. "HOORAY FOR LOVE" finds Ella in a cheery mood, exuding all the ups, downs and in-between emotions that Cupid's arrows can provide. May's easy swing tempo, infused with quick brass jots are classic. Back to a ballad mood may be the very anchor and best gem of this whole set, the wistful "THIS TIME THE DREAM'S ON ME", with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The arrangement is nothing short of marvelous here, and Ella knows just where to use the slightest of pitch changes for dramatic effect. A definite heartstring tugger. The happy feeling "LET'S TAKE A WALK AROUND THE BLOCK" puts across while transporting us "all over the map" really evokes a smile. Again, May knows just how to lead Ella across the globe and back without ever intruding on her own groove. "ONE FOR MY BABY ( and one more for the road)", long a Sinatra crowd pleaser and torch song extraordinaire, gets the swinger's rush here; and the message is still there, it's a torch song, but fueled by martinis! And unlike Sinatra's heartbroken version(s), the listener isn't exactly sure when that "one more for the road" is coming, it seems like there's a party going on with no end! Harold Arlen's claim to fame might be summed up in a "shining hour" of his own, the music to the MGM classic "THE WIZARD OF OZ". There is no way to get close to Judy Garland when it comes to "OVER THE RAINBOW", but Ella's version stands on its own merit as plaintive and to-the-point. And while they were on the Yellow Brick Road, May leads Ella into a jubilant free-for-all with "DING-DONG! THE WITCH IS DEAD". Extensive liner notes in this final leg of the popular Ella Songbooks series, as all the others (Berlin, Porter, Rodgers&Hart, Ellington, Gershwin, Kern and Mercer) have been remastered and reissued with bonus material. Great listening, part of American music history that you'll be proud to own!

Blue Skies 3:43 This handsomely repackaged collection of 32 masterfully crafted songs by American composer Irving Belin stands as part of the greatest body of work produced by any 20th century popular singer. In compiling her monumental songbook collection Fitzgerald paid tribute to America's "big five", Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Richard Rogers, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin. She also recorded the works of Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, superb but arguably second tier composers. Of the "big five", Berlin is admittedly the most sentimental and perhaps least urbane. Where Richard Rogers could tell of ladies playing craps, (The Lady Is A Tramp) and Cole Porter could write of sniffing cocaine, (I Get A Kick Out Of You) and illicit love, (Love For Sale) Berlin was content to praise the joys of Easter Bonnets, White Christmas and Alexander's Ragtime Band. But let's not forget his more than capable hand at romance with the likes of Cheek To Cheek, Blue Skies and I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm. As with all of Ella's songbooks, the arrangements, the selections and of course her superlative styling make this essential listening. I do have a preference for the Cole Porter and Rogers & Hart songbooks, but this collection still rates five stars. How could you miss with Ella and Berlin?
